re: Monday SLotRO Updates

Thanks to everyone who came out this week.  We did a mix of chicken play, Harvest Festival, and Shire quests.

To catch up to the group on chicken play, you should get up to (but not complete) the Flying the Coop quest.  Just talk to Wald Sandson at Sandson's Farm, north of Michel Delving, and keep doing quests with him until you get there.  The three previous quests are "Which Laid First?", "The Early Bird", and "The Sky is Falling".

For the Harvest Festival, we just did the intro quests for the Inn League and the Ale Association, where you run around and drink at the various locations.

For the Shire quests, we just did a few and then called it a night.  You should complete the following quests:

Adelard's Chapter

Gerebert Misses a Meal

The Founding Writ

A Sack of Feed

Ghost of the Old Took

Honey-Bears

Old Sally

Shore Up the Fence

After completing these, as well as the earlier areas we went to, you should have the following quests active:

Flying the Coop

The Bird and Baby (ready to be turned in)

Longo's Leaf-Waggon (ready to be turned in)

Belco's Writ (ready to be turned in)

The Old Took's Favourite

A Salve for Stings

My Grandson's Lunch (ready to be turned in)

We'll be starting from Tuckborough next Monday at 8:30 server time!

Notes on the October 28th session:

We finished up the Tuckborough and Hobbiton quests, and then did a couple of the chicken quests.  We also opened up the Pie-Runner deed, and did two of those quests.  To catch up with the group, you should have the following quests open:

Needlehole Watch (ready to turn in)

Leaf in Woodhall (ready to turn in)

The Green Dragon (picked up while in Bywater for another quest)

A Salve for Stings

Seeking Saltpetre (ready to turn in, part of the Lobelia's Fireworks chain)

My Grandson's Lunch (ready to turn in)

On the pie-running deed, we have completed the Tuckborough quest and the Hobbiton quest (which you get at the Party Tree), so we're at 2/12 on that deed so far.

On Bingo Boffin, you should be on the quest "Training for the Journey", up to the point where he tells you to meet him by the Stocktower.  We'll pick it up from there once we get to the Stock quests.

On the chicken quests, we did the three you get from Farmer Sandson (gathering eggs, then delivering them to Holly Hornblower and Gammer Tunnelly).  We also did the "Flying the Coop" quest, and then the "Flying the Coop -- Bree-Land" quest.  We're going to try to space those out as we go along, so we don't get burned out on them.

Finally, on the epic, you should be on the "Make Yourself Useful" quest, which we'll pick back up when we get to Scary.

Let's plan on meeting next time in Needlehole, where we can turn in the Needlehole Watch quest, and then run the pie from there back to Holly Hornblower.

Notes on the November 4th session:

This week we made it up to Woodhall, just doing the regular landscape quests (no chicken quests).  That means you should have finished up the quests in Hobbiton, Overhill, and Frogmorton.  In Overhill, we decided to do the Web-Cutter and Free the Tree quests solo, since only one person seems able to turn in and pick up the next one at a time, and the escort is a bit long.  Here are the quests you should still have:

Longo's Missing Waggon (just picked up in Woodhall)

Seeking Saltpetre (ready to turn in, part of the Lobelia's Fireworks chain)

My Grandson's Lunch (ready to turn in)

On the Restoring the Quick Post deed, you should be at 9 of 13, with the following still to do:

Woodhall to Stock

Stock to Budgeford

Budgeford to Scary

Scary to Brockenborings

On the No Place for Spoiled Pies deed, you should now be at 3 of 12, since we only completed the Needlehole pie run since last time.

No changes from last time on Bingo Boffin, the chicken quests, or the epic line.

We'll start off next week in Woodhall!

Notes on the November 11th session:

Sorry I forgot to post these sooner.  This week we knocked out the Woodhall and Stock quests, as well as doing some additional pie-running and chicken play.  The only two Shire quests I have active are:

Seeking Saltpetre (ready to turn in, part of the Lobelia's Fireworks chain)

My Grandson's Lunch (ready to turn in)

On the Restoring the Quick Post deed, you should now be at 10 of 13, with the following still to do:

Stock to Budgeford

Budgeford to Scary

Scary to Brockenborings

On Bingo Boffin, we are now on the Leaving is Not Easy quest, and have made the first run back to his hobbit hole to pick up his walking stick, but we haven't gone to meet him in Bywater yet.

On the No Place for Spoiled Pies deed, you should now be at 6 of 12.  We ran the pies from Woodhall, Stock, and Little Delving this week.

Finally, we ran Flying the Coop -- Ered Luin this week (the shortest one).

Still on Make Yourself Useful in the epic prologue.

Let's meet where we left off last time, at Sandson's Farm, and we can open with the Evendim chicken run, before heading back to Stock and taking the bundle to Budgeford.

Notes on the November 18th session:

We began this week with Flying the Coop -- Evendim, so we just have the Lone-Lands, North Downs, and Trollshaws to go before we hit Free Range.

We are finished with Budgeford, and ready to head to Scary!  The only Shire quest in my log now is:

My Grandson's Lunch (ready to turn in)

Still on Make Yourself Useful in the epic prologue, but that one's also in Scary, so we should finally begin making progress there again next week.

On the Restoring the Quick Post deed, you should now be at 11 of 13, with the following still to do:

Budgeford to Scary

Scary to Brockenborings

We completed Bingo Boffin's trip out of the Shire.  You should now be on the quest A Brood of Boffins, with the task to talk to Prisca Boffin outside her home in Newbury (which we will do when we get to the Bree-Lands).

On the No Place for Spoiled Pies deed, you should now be at 7 of 12.  We ran the pie from Frogmorton this week, but we still have the following to do:

Brockenborings

Budgeford

Bywater

Michel Delving

Scary

We'll begin next time by Postman Bolger in Budgeford, and we'll start by taking the bundle to Scary.

Notes on the November 25th session:

This week we came close to wrapping up the Shire!  We finished the regular landscape quests in Scary and Brockenborings.  We also took the epic up to The Shire Unprotected, where our next task is to talk to Barliman Butterbur.  We finished all ther remaining Quick Post and Pie-Running quests, and completed the corresponding deeds.  Finally, we also completed the chicken run to the Lone-Lands.

Next week, we'll start at Sandson's Farm and do the chicken run to the North Downs.  We'll then run around the Shire finishing slayer deeds for everyone.  Finally, we'll go back to Sandson's Farm and do the chicken run to the Trollshaws, time permitting.  Since I'm planning to leave Free Range and The Great Wide Open for sometime when we need a questing break, that will finish up the Shire for us, for now.

Notes on the December 2nd session:

We've completed the Shire (for now)!  We ran both the North Downs and Trollshaws chicken runs, and then did Returning to Wald to get the Cloak of the Cluck.  We also mopped up the slayer deeds for everyone.  We still have the three long-range chicken quests remaining (Free Range, The Great Wide Open, and There and Bawk Again), but we'll do those another time.

Everyone try to complete anything else you have remaining in the Shire, and we'll begin next time in Archet!

Notes on the December 9th session:

We've completed Archet, and almost all of Combe.  Under Bree-Land quests, you should have Friendships Renewed.  For the prologue, you should be on The Hideout, and up to the point where it says to "Enter the Blackwolds' hideout".

Next time we'll meet up in Combe and travel to the hideout, and then move on to (hopefully) knock out Staddle.

Notes on the December 16th session:

We knocked out the rest of the Bree-Lands intro area in Combe and Staddle, and finished the final prologue!  Under Bree-Land, you should have the following quests:

Pipe-Weed Delivery (left over from Bruner Stoutthrush on the east side of town)

No Time for Tours! (pick this up and talk to Butterbur, then stop)

Bree-Town to Trestlebridge (picked up from the mayor, will turn in later, when we get to the northern Bree-Lands quests)

For the epic, turn in all three prologue quests, and pick up the foreword to book 1: An Unwanted Guest.  Stop when it says to talk to Strider.

No session on the 23rd, so we'll get back together on the 30th.  We'll start off with the first few epic chapters, then do the turtle quest chain around Bree, and then head for the surrounding areas.  We'll also take off the tortoise stone, and raise the level cap to 21!

Notes on the December 30th session:

On the epic, we got up to chapter 5 of book 1, where it tells you to go talk to Lenglinn.

We then did the Infiltrators' Surprise chain in Bree, which you get by using one of the Posted Bills found scattered around the south of town.

Afterwards, we followed the No Time for Tours! quest to Chief Watcher Grimbriar, and completed the various quests beginning with him and the other two NPCs there.  He then sent us south to the Vale of Andrath, and we completed the quests there as well.

Finally, we headed west, skipping over Adso's Camp for now (apart from picking up the stable point), and went on to Buckland.  We'll begin there next week.

Note that the level cap has been raised to 21, so be sure to take off your Stone of the Tortoise until you hit the new cap.

Notes on the January 6th session:

This week we mainly knocked out the Buckland quests, and got started on the quests at Adso's Camp.

On the epic, we got up to Chapter 7, where it sends you back to Strider, and then stopped (i.e., before going back to talk to him).

On the Bingo Boffin quests, we have advanced to the quest Marigold, but stopped when the task instructed us to "Find the house of the strange creature with yellow boots, in the Old Forest".  We'll resume that chain later, when we do the Barrow-Downs.

We cleared out all the quests from Buckland, both those northeast of town and those in the Old Forest.  We also found all the flowers of the Old Forest except for Neldorlas' and Braiglad's.

At Adso's Camp, we did the first quest, where you talk to Bill Ferny, and then the subsequent three quests, where you kill boars and bandits at the Old Sweetgrass farm, to the northeast.

We stopped before the next round there, so you should now have the following from this area:

In the Shadow of Giants

Paying Bills

Searching for Fresh Springs

Threats and Follow-Through

Wolf-Pelts

We'll pick back up where we left off next time, which should complete Adso's Camp and take us north to Saeradan.

Notes on the January 13th session:

We made good progress this week, getting all the way to Nen Harn!

We began by finishing up all the quests at Adso's Camp, as well as picking up the two Old Forest flowers we didn't get to last time.  We then returned to Bree, turned in No Time for Tours, and advanced to the next chapter of the epic (Chapter 8).

Next, we went north to Saeradan, and completed all the quests there, at Thornley's Farm, and from Andreg at the Old Greenway Fort.  Saeradan then sent us north to Hengstacer Farm.

We picked up all the quests there, and completed the ones around Oddvar, and the orc camp to the east.  Finally, we made it to the ruins near Nen Harn, and currently have the following uncompleted quests:

Bounty: Big Enough for Rugs

Bounty: The Perfect Curl

Bounty: Turtle-Shells

By Axe and Fire

Snapper Soup

Next time we'll pick back up in Nen Harn, finish those quests, and head for the Barrow Downs, and the rest of the epic.

Notes on the January 20th session:

This week we finished up the northern Bree-Lands quests, did the skirmish intro quests, and then ran both Siege of Gondamon and Trouble in Tuckborough.

Next week we will probably begin with Storm on Mathedras, and then move on to the Barrow Downs and the remaining epic quests.

Notes on the January 27th session:

This week we ran Storm on Mathedras, completed the Northern Barrow Downs, and got to Chapter 12 of the epic.  We wrapped up after picking up all the quests at the Dead Man's Perch.  You should now have the following Southern Barrow Downs quests:

Addie's Missing Sons

Bone Man

Bounty: Barghest Eyes

Bounty: Cardolan Relics

Bounty: Wight-Skulls

At the Forest's Edge

From Death, Comes Life

Unfortunate Harvest

You may also still have Gathering Grave-Moss from the Bree-Lands rep quests; the others should probably be complete, although you can pick them up again for next week.  Don't forget that you will want to save 100 Barrow-Treasures to get your Return to Bree skill, if you are not Race of Man.

Next week, we'll meet at the Dead Man's Perch and knock out the Southern Barrow Downs, including the rest of the Executioner of the Wicked deed.  We can then move on to mopping up the rest of the Bree-Lands deeds, and/or rerun skirmishes.

Notes on the February 3rd session:

This week we wrapped up the landscape quests in the Bree-Lands!  All we have left to do in this area (for now) are the slayer deeds and the Great Barrow instances, both of which we will at least start on next week.  Here are all the quests I still have in my quest log:

Bree-Land

Candac's Delay (completes in the Lone-Lands)

Thistlewool's Sullied Name (completes in the Lone-Lands)

Epic - Vol. I, Book 2: The Red Maid

Book 2, Foreword: Aiding the Order (task should say to talk to Saeradan, but don't do this yet)

Great Barrows

Collecting History (from Tobold Leafcutter, on the Old Barrows Road)

Heading West (from Aradia, outside the Great Barrow)

Purging the Dead (from Bob Redthistle, at the Dead Man's Perch)

Introduction

Destination: Lone-Lands (should have been auto-bestowed when you hit level 19)

The Ballad of Bingo Boffin

The Two Taverns (advance this until you get to the task to travel to the Forsaken Inn, then stop)

The Road to Erebor

The Road to the Lonely Mountain (Advance this until you have three tasks, to complete the three 3-man instances.  Bestowed by Gandalf in the Prancing Pony.  I think you are only going to have access to this if you own the Riders of Rohan expansion.)

Western Gondor: Belfalas

Homesteads of Gondor (we may do this together at some point, but don't worry if you've already done it, or if you're skipping it on this character)

Next week we will work on slayer deeds and the Great Barrow, but I also want to discuss the following question, so please be thinking about your preference between now and then:

We have now uncovered three skirmishes, the Road to Erebor instances, and the Great Barrow instances.  We'll be opening an additional instance and up to three skirmishes in the Lone-Lands.  While we also have access to Epic Battles, my intention is to reserve those until they are uncovered by our progression through the other content (i.e., we'll do the Helm's Deep ones when we get to Western Rohan, Pelargir in Western Gondor, etc.).  My question is, how do we want to handle progressing through the other instances?

One option would be to grind through them as soon as we get them, essentially doing them over and over until we complete all their associated deeds, or at least as much of the deeds as we can.

Another option, and my personal preference, would be to do each of the instances once when we get to it, and then set a regular cadence for repeating them, doing maybe one or two instances per week, while also continuing to advance the landscape content.  This seems like a better approach to me for two reasons.  First, it's possible to hit a ceiling in terms of advancing your virtues, so I don't want to rush to complete deeds that we then would lose the virtue experience for.  Second, I personally have a tendency to get burned out on instances when I run them too many times in a row, and this pace would prevent that.

All that said, we will definitely do whatever the entire group prefers, so be thinking of how you want to approach the instances, whether it's one of the two options above, or some other approach -- we might make most sessions landscape sessions, and then once a month do ONLY instances, or really any strategy someone comes up with that most people like.
